While Madison would get his desired declaration of war against the United Kingdom in June, the antiwar Federalist party response is summed up in the following verse: “The Henry Papers, bought and sold, and paid for with the nation’s gold.” 17

There is little information about Henry’s life after leaving the United States. Apparently, De Crillon’s estate in France was a fabrication—perhaps a front—and Henry was last known to have been employed by King George IV of England to spy on his wayward wife, Caroline of Brunswick, in the hopes of gaining sufficient evidence to divorce her on grounds of adultery. Henry is believed to have died in Paris in 1853.

Fort Adams’s first commanding officer was certainly a complex man. Although there are more questions about his life than available answers, he may be summed up in the words of nineteenth-century historian Henry Adams: “He was a political blackmailer, an adventurer; and, like a good many of his political superiors, more or less a liar.” 18 Ironically, this same Henry Adams, who provided such biographical information as we have concerning De Crillon and John Henry, was the great-grandson of President John Adams, for whom Fort Adams was named on July 4, 1799—the day Captain John Henry became its first commanding officer.
